Whether it’s for a scrape from falling off a bike
, or an ice pack for a sports injury while you’re away from home, getting caught without a first aid kit can be tough.

Fortunately, it’s easy to put one together so you’re prepared. Keep one at home and in the car so you always have what you need on hand!

First aid kit fundamentals

The CDC and American Red Cross recommend including adhesive tape, antibiotic ointment, antiseptic wipes, aspirin, bandages, cotton swabs, disposable gloves, emergency blanket, hand sanitizer, hydrocortisone ointment, instant cold pack, plastic bags, safety pins, sanitary napkins, scissors and tweezers, splinting materials, and a thermometer.

Consider needs unique to your family

It’s a good idea to include items that are helpful to your loved ones’ healthcare needs. If someone has an allergy, include antihistamine medication and an epinephrine injector (EpiPen). Keeping glucose tablets and gels may be helpful if someone has diabetes. A list of medications taken by each family member and an extra stock of them is also beneficial in case of an emergency.

Here are some additional items to include in your car first aid kit so you’re prepared on the go

  • Band-Aids come in handy for small scrapes and cuts.
  • Snacks such as granola bars, peanut butter crackers, dried fruit, or peanuts can help if there is a delay in getting back home, such as a car breakdown or storm.
  • Water and juice boxes are good to have on hand for hydration
  • Hydrogen peroxide and gauze can be used to clean and wrap a wound.
  • Dramamine if you or a loved one gets motion sickness.

Remember to open your kit every so often so you can check expiration dates and restock. Two times a year is a good rule of thumb, unless you use it often.
