These days it is understandable if you are finding it challenging to get your children outside daily. With video games, social media, TV shows, and movies, there are a lot of compelling reasons to stay indoors. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to peak their interest. Here are some ideas to get you started:

1. Build. You could use blankets, wood, or any other materials around the house to build a fort or even a tree house. Regardless of what it actually looks like, having a project to work on with your children will help motivate them to come back outside each day.

2. Garden. Whether you are planting flowers or picking up weeds, gardening provides a great excuse to get outside. Plus, taking charge of this kind of project will help your children learn about responsibility.

3. Explore. Hide “treasures” throughout the yard or neighborhood and create a treasure map. Not only will your children get lots of exercise, they will also learn about teamwork, problem-solving, and healthy competition.

4. Camp. Whether it is in the backyard or on a campground, camping can help your children embrace the outdoors. Plus, they can work together to set up the tent, build a campfire, and make delicious s'mores!

5. Engage. Point out the wildlife to your children so they can immerse themselves in the experience. You could observe the intricate pattern on a caterpillar or a squirrel scurrying across the backyard. Whatever you choose to focus on, try to be present with your children.

6. Play. Outdoor games help your children to be social and physically active. Some games you might consider include capture the flag, tag, or making up something together! Let the goal be to find joy and ease in whatever activity you decide on.

7. Experiment. Your children can climb trees, ride bikes, hike trails, skateboard, roller blade, and more. See which they prefer and remember that there are always plenty of activities to investigate.

8. Stay healthy. Keep your children strong and healthy so they keep enjoying the outdoors! If you need support, you can always meet with a provider on Amwell.
