You are probably familiar with sinus infections and may have had one (or many) yourself. They usually occur when viruses or bacteria build up in the sinuses as the result of a cold. Everyone experiences sinus infections differently, but symptoms typically include runny and/or stuffy nose, facial pain or pressure, headache, mucus dripping down the throat, sore through, cough, and bad breath.

Sometimes it can be difficult to know when you should see a doctor. Many sinus infections resolve themselves within about seven to 10 days and don't require a doctor visit or any antibiotics. In this case, symptoms can usually be treated using pain relievers. Other ways to help ease the discomfort may include:

  • Placing a warm compress over the nose and forehead to relieve sinus pressure
  • Using a decongestant, nasal spray, or salt water in the nose
  • Breathing in steam from a bowl of hot water or while in the shower

It's a good idea to see a doctor if:

  • Symptoms last longer than 10 days without improvement
  • Symptoms worsen after having improved
  • Symptoms such as the headache and facial pain are severe
  • Your fever lasts more than three to four days
