ADHD/ADD Treatment Online

ADHD and ADD are conditions that affect one's ability to stay focused on every day activities. These conditions are not uncommon in children, but can also occur in adults.

ADHD/ADD symptoms can vary, but patients typically experience:

  • Inattention
  • Hyperactivity (in ADHD)
  • Impulsivity
  • And more.

Diagnosing and Treating ADHD and ADD Online

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common conditions among children. While children without the condition can certainly be fidgety and restless at times, ADHD/ADD is diagnosed when these symptoms occur frequently and to a degree that they interfere with the child’s functioning or behavior at home and in school.

Inattention can include a variety of symptoms including, but not limited to:

  • Easily distracted
  • Forgetful
  • Trouble with organization

Hyperactivity and impulsivity can include a variety of symptoms as well, but are not limited to:

  • Always on the go
  • Squirming in their seat or fidgety
  • Difficulty waiting for their turn

During a video consult on Amwell your therapist and/or psychiatrist will ask you a series of targeted questions to determine if your symptoms point to ADHD/ADD. Then your provider will proceed to determine the best treatment plan for you. Your provider may recommend in-person examination by a specialist if this is needed. Your treatment plan is based on the duration, severity of symptoms and your child's medical history. Questions about work, home environment and habits may also be discussed.

Once a diagnosis has been made, the clinician will determine the best treatment plan and go over the risks and benefits of the various interventions. Depending on the cause and severity of ADHD/ADD, the treatment plan may include:

  • Medications that can be helpful for treatment*
  • Team activities
  • Strategies for restful sleep
  • Establishing simple and predictable routines
  • Education about how diet can affect ADHD symptoms

*Amwell doctors are not able to provide controlled substances such as Adderall, Ritalin, Concerta, etc. to you over the internet; if a controlled medication is recommended as part of your treatment plan, you would need to see a provider in person for this, such as your primary care provider or a local psychiatrist.

See below for answers to some of our most common questions. You can also call us anytime 24 hours a day at 1‑844‑SEE‑DOCS for questions about our services or to speak to a doctor about your symptoms or conditions.

  • Are there any natural remedies for ADHD?

Despite some theories about diet (nutritional imbalances, mineral deficiencies, etc.) and supplementation, there are not any proven natural remedies.

  • What can Amwell psychiatrists prescribe for ADHD?

For ADD, Amwell psychiatrists can prescribe medications such as Strattera, clonidine and other options. We cannot prescribe controlled substances, unless a patient is currently in a DEA registered facility (i.e. CMHC, an In-Clinic Program site, etc.).

  • What is the difference between ADD and ADHD?

ADD stands for attention deficit disorder, while ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The “H” in ADHD is when hyperactivity is a symptom. Adults will typically not express hyperactivity and only have the attentional issues.

  • What medications are there for ADHD?

Stimulants (e.g., Ritalin, Dexedrine) are effective for treatment of ADHD/ADD, but they are controlled substances, which cannot be prescribed online. Other medications include Strattera, clonidine and other options, which are not controlled substances and can be prescribed online.
